Help needed to improve my low FPS

Hello everybody,

I have a laptop with the following specification:

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual Core CPU T2390 @ 1.86GHz
RAM: 3.00 GB
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
Gaming Graphics: 358 MB Total available graphics memory
OS: Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium (32 bit)

I have DirectX 10 & my resolution is 1280x800, with refresh rate at 60 Hz.

When I first installed Steam & CS Source, my FPS on the Video Stress Test was a mere 10 FPS. However, thanks to this site, I used Master Plan's helpful configuration settings & saved them to an autoexec.cfg file. Here are the settings:

Furthermore, I put the following settings in CS Source's Launch Options:

-dxlevel 81 (I've heard that DirectX 9 settings has glitches)
-w 1280 -h 800 (my desktop resolution)
-heapsize 1572864 (since I have 3GB RAM)

Now my FPS is 15-20 - still not good enough.

I've set the max FPS as 60. Can anybody give me advice on what settings should be changed in order to improve the FPS? Would really appreciate it.

The problem is you are running a dual core chip and CSS will only use 1 of those 2 as it does not support Dual core. As CSS uses this more than a Graphic Card you are basically a bit fucked as your system will not be able to run CSS that well. Even putting everything on low and removing shadows etc etc will still run at low fps.

I am not expert though but I reckon you need to either upgrade the CPU or buy a new PC/laptop

i'm not an expert but if what cheddar says is true then open up task manager, right click on counterstrike's .exe (whatever that is under processes) and set affinity to one of the cores.

That's a crying shame . I guess I need a better CPU since (with Keenyboy's advice) even with both cores being used, the FPS is at a measly 15-20. If I only use 1 core, then the FPS is at 10!

The problem is that when I set hl.exe's (that's what the process is called) affinity, it says that I've used both cores (see screenshot below). Does this mean that the game is using both cores?

Your using a laptop with a 1.86 ghz cpu , shared gfx card. No way you'll get a decent game of css with that setup, unless you wish to do the old chestnut and camp somewhere with an awp.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I want to play the game properly (like I used to) so I guess I'll have to set up my desktop no matter what.

yeah i accidently put set it to one core. i meant to say make sure its set to both cores. i was thinking of a problem i was having with dragon age: origins. sry

Don't worry, no need to apologise.

CS Source uses both of my cores. The bottom line is, just like Doomy said, I need a faster processor. I have this but it's on my desktop PC, which I just can't set up now.
